The Ley Arms - Kenn, Nr Exeter

The area dates back to 55 BC - 400 AD when the Romans built link roads between Exeter and Totnes.  Kenn was already mentioned in the Doomsday book that the manor was once owned by a Saxon named Brismer but was confiscated and become part of the Barony of Okehampton under Baldwin de Bron.  Parts of the Inn are reputed to be well over 700 years old and this delightful thatched building stands in the shadow of the Church.  Giles the landlord had stated that members of staff had always felt "uneasy" in the restaurant area of the bar and the areas leading to the toilets.  Although nothing had been visible to them a presence had been sensed and at times the whole area could become oppressive.

Investigation

Place: The Ley Arms, Kenn Nr Exeter

Date: 11th March 2006

Time: 1100 - 0500 hrs

Preliminaries

Dave Gill and Byron arrived at around 9 pm to this lively venue located in the village of Kenn.  Baseline checks were made in all areas that were open to the team which included temperature and EMF readings.  EMF activity was recorded in the doorway leading from the bar area to the toilets this was found to be emanating from the emergency lighting system so was discounted. Despite its age the building was quiet and a comfortable temperature was maintained throughout.  The Inn was once said to have a tunnel leading to the church and legend had it that in the early 1900's the tunnel collapsed killing several workers - this has NEVER been verified.

Medium Use

Unfortunately both Wincey and Stu were otherwise engaged for this venue. However our sensitive's Vee, Tracy and Bridget all felt uncomfortable in the area leading to the toilets. It later transpired that staff disliked the area also and that the fire doors had a tendency to open on there own.  Dowsing later attributed the area to a female spirit who wished the team to leave - several of the female team members felt sick and light headed.  A later séance held by Byron, Dave and Paul added to that found by the girls dating the spirit to around the 1500's.  Clergy were also sensed in the area by Vee.

Vigils

A mixture of darkness vigils séance and unaccompanied walk around continued throughout the morning.  Spectacular light anomalies were witnessed by all team members via remote night vision CCTV cameras located in the function room and the main restaurant areas this appeared to be almost constant and was first attributed to the air conditioning unit. This theory was later quickly discounted as the air conditioning was off and the in any case the movement and intensity of the lights defied normal and rational airflow. A large and intense flash appeared to our newcomers Hannah and Lucy whilst the remainder of the team were in séance.  Whilst laughable the toilets played a key role in this investigation with all team members sensing "something" in that area. Byron and Paul independently smelt fresh "pipe" smoke in that area whilst the females of the team - felt uneasy in the ladies toilets!

The restaurant area - The Ley Arms

Through the evening two independent audible's were heard the first witnessed by Byron and Tracy occurred whilst Byron was walking away from the fireplace a definite "blow" was heard Byron believing this to be Tracy turned around and was surprised to find that she too had witnessed the sound.  Dave was also later subjected to a similar experience we could find no rational explanation for the noises.  Trigger objects were placed however failed to react throughout the evening.

Conclusion

This was a wonderful place that is full of atmosphere and which the team I believed enjoyed immensely.  All credit for this venue must go to Dave the Orb who pulled this one out of his sack! Our thanks also to Giles the landlord his staff and of course the locals for allowing us into their Inn.
