Introduction:
This was Haunted
Devon’s first visit to Bodmin Jail which stands in the centre of Bodmin
Town. This ominous and foreboding 18th Century stone building
was built in 1776 to house the county prison. It was the first jail to
hold inmates in individual cells and famously carried out public
executions by hanging until 1862, with 55 executions carried out in
total.
The prison finally closed in 1927 and since then has
become a popular tourist attraction with exhibitions telling the 150
years of torture and punishment.

Preliminaries
Byron arrived early and set up some recordable data temperature logs for
the baseline tests. The teams arrived for 18:30 and met in the
jail’s restaurant which was formally the officer’s mess.
Mediumship Preliminary
In
the initial walk around Caz felt extremely nauseous for no apparent
reason and also suffered an effect to her physical vision which became
blurred. Shortly after this Caz became aware of the presence of a
gent stood by the bar area, she described him as an authority figure,
wearing a prison uniform with a chain of keys. He wore a cap with
insignia on it. She felt this man had a strong connection with this area
of the prison.
Caz
sensed that this gentleman was a brash man who would have been a bully
and would often throw his weight around. He stood at the bar for a few
minutes then disappeared. She felt that audible noises of keys or
muffled voices maybe heard by those in the bar area when it is very late
or when locking up.

Site Orientation
A
safety brief and site orientation by Byron was carried out and team
allocation took place. The lights were turned off and the transfer into
darkness to place for the investigation.
Navel Wing
Team
2 started in the Navel wing area and were immediately impressed by the
size of this part of the jail. It was constructed as is a modern
prison with a series of landings in a long formation. It is in a semi
ruined state with no roof, so it is open to the elements.
Within 10 minutes of arriving in this area both Andy’s felt pains in the
neck area which were both short lived. Laura (sensitive) picked up on
names including Timothy and Anderson and felt they were prisoners in
this area, but this could not be verified. Laura could visualise a
prisoner with shackles who she felt was in a very depressed state, not
just due to his interment but the impending deportation, which would
take him away from his family. She also heard a whistle coming from one
of the cells which was heard by other members of the team. On
identifying the approximate area, we could not explain this, nor could
we rule out a background noise as the bar/restaurant area was still
being used by members of the public. The team called out to
communicate but did not experience any results.
Digital pictures were taken and “orbs” were captured, but the “orbs”
could be explained due to the light rain coming through the open roof.
The Main Cells
This
area provided the best results of all the investigation areas, and was
the central focus of the evening’s investigation. The first incident was
witnessed by Ian where he saw some green lights moving across the floor
from one of the cell doors to the opposite side. This was later
witnessed by Miffie and Mike.
A
table tipping exercise proved to provide very interesting results. Team
2 relocated a table from another area of the prison to set up the table
tipping exercise in the main cell area. Andy, Martin, Laura and Andy GF
took part and called out to any spirits to communicate using the groups’
powers to tip the table. Paul filmed the exercise from outside the group
using a camera with an infra-red night light. When the group called out
to any spirits it received a series of responses in the form of knocking
from separate drainpipes either side of the group. Another group
received the same knocking but this could be explained due to the heavy
rain experienced on that evening.
The
table had some vibrations and slight movement during the exercise even
though it was on an even section of the floor. Paul had captured a
series of “orbs” around the group on the infra-red cameral and later
witnessed the table move on it’s own after the tipping exercise.
Team
1 carried out the same exercise and also witnessed movement with some
physical responses resulting in Trace having an icy feeling on her neck,
a cold sweat and felt the top of her head being touched. All the
three teams felt a presence in the far right-hand corner of the cells
area at the end. This area housed an electric chair display. Two teams
experienced a shuffling noise on separate occasions in this area and
manly commented on feeling a presence. A female spirit was sensed
by 2 of the teams and Trace described her as having shoulder length dark
straggly hair with sores around her mouth. Trace felt she could not
speak and described her as sitting in a filthy cell holding her dead
infant child.
Screaming and whipping was heard from a small annex cell area which was
heard by Mike and Paul. Without any previous knowledge of this area, it
was later discovered that this was indeed an area used for flogging
prisoners. One of the most interesting incidents occurred whilst
team 2 held a vigil in the centre of the wing. Andy and Laura witnessed
a white mist pass very quickly between them as they were in opposite
positions of the each other in a group circle. This could be witnessed
due to Andy’s torch focussing on the centre of the circle. Quite a
few cameras also suffered extreme battery drainage which affected Caz,
Miffie and Byron.
A
séance was carried out by team 3 and after initially calling out, Caz
sensed a spirit circling the group and sensed it was trying to enter
Mike, as this was unsuccessfully it then apparently moved to Sarah who
was positioned to the left of Mike. Sarah then felt dizzy & nauseas and
had to step back from the group.
Laundry Area
Haunted Devon did not pick up too much activity in this area except for
Mike who sensed a Thomas Clitheroe, (a named sensed earlier) was
punished in this part of the prison. This area housed the treadmill
which was used to punish prisoners with a tiring, physical and never
ending exercise, it comprised of approximately 10,000 steps a day, which
was the equivalent of climbing Mount Snowdon, three times a day. It
served no purpose but to punish the prisoner and could be adjusted by a
turn of the screw to make the rotation harder. This is where jailers
earned the nickname of “screws”.
Team
3 carried out a séance in this area, created a circle by linking hands.
Here Mike picked up on the spirit of a young women and child, with the
feeling that the woman was responsible for the death of child. During
this time, Ian who was stood to the right of Sarah commented that
Sarah’s hand felt small and childlike.
Condemned Cells
Strangely enough, Miffie sensed the phrase “pop star” but as it was
unrelated to the prison she dismissed it. Caz later confirmed that the
singer Englebert Humperdinck (famous for the song Please Release Me!)
used this area as a make up room for a performance a few years ago.
Miffie then revealed her thought which she dismissed earlier.
This
area was also fairly quiet but Jan felt 3 firm taps on her shoulder
which could not be replicated with the dripping water from the ceiling.
Conclusion
Bodmin jail provided plenty of evidence such as orbs, sound phenomena
and light anomalies with team members suffering from physical feelings
of dizziness & nausea. The central main wing provided the most activity
with similar evidence captured by different teams.
Some
of the evidence could be explained by activity in the bar/ restaurant
area which was used throughout the evening and a subjective view was
used to evaluate all evidence. The evidence gained from this short
investigation would highlight Bodmin jail as an active location and one
which is worth a further detailed visit in the future.
